Instrumental music is offered to District 65 students in grades 4-8. Mr. Janossy teaches Orchestra at Haven Middle School, and Kingsley, Willard, and Orrington Elementary Schools.
Members of Haven's Orchestra Program are part of a continuing tradition of excellence that extends back to the school's founding in 1927. There is a banner in the Orchestra archives that shows the Orchestra won a contest back in the 1920's! Many historical articles in the Evanston Review, Haven Scroll, and school yearbooks show pictures of instrumental music concerts and events. Haven Orchestra students have the opportunity to continue their musical experience in the award-winning Arts Department at Evanston Township High School.
One of the great things about Orchestra at Haven is that we have our own classroom. We have a collection of cellos and basses, so most of the time cellists and bassists will not have to bring their instruments to and from school. (Unless there are a very large number of students!)
There are many great concerts planned during the school year, including the annual Orchestra Tour to the Elementary Schools, and Haven's Winter and Spring Concerts. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in the Illinois Music Educator's District 7 Honors Orchestra and the Illinois Grade School Music Association Solo and Ensemble Contest.
The Orchestra News is a video news show that is produced weekly. Students serve as announcers, Mr. Janossy makes our classroom announcements, and there are guest appearance by our Orchestra Mascots, Sharky & Foxy, and their friends. The adventures of our mascots began during Covid e-learning, and can be viewed on YouTube (Sharky, Foxy & Friends).
Mr. Janossy has been the Orchestra Teacher at Haven since 2001. He has a Master's Degree in Music Education from Northwestern University and a Bachelor's Degree in Music Performance from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He has earned a Certificate in Nonprofit Management from University of Illinois at Chicago, and the Instructional Leadership Certificate from Harvard Graduate School of Education. His major instruments are the double bass, piano, and organ, and he also sings. He is a Board Member of EISMA (Evanston In-School Music Association). Musical experiences have taken him across the US and internationally, including Italy, the U.K., Germany, Belgium, Canada, Colorado, and Washington, D.C.
